BONN, GERMANY  The 3 th Nexus Global Program Coordination Committee meeting was held on June 5-6, 2019 to review the results of the Nexus program

BONN, GERMANY – The 3rd Executive Committee Meeting of the Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme was held on June 5-6, 2019 to review the results of the Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme Phase I implementation in five regions of the world (Niger River Basin and Senegal River Basin, Middle East and North Africa (MENA), South Africa (SADC), Latin America and Central Asia) and to discuss proposals for the Phase II of the Global Nexus Program for achieving the water, energy and food security in the regions of the Programme. The meeting was attended by representatives of five regions, the European Union and the Government of Germany, as well as teams implementing projects in the regions (German Corporation for International Cooperation GmbH (GIZ), Global Water Partnership, CAREC and other interested bodies and organizations (Ministry of Economy Germany and Austria, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, and others). 6 people participated from the Central Asian region: Guyzgeldi Bayjanov, Chairman of the Executive Committee of IFAS, two representatives of the Republic of Tajikistan: Daler Abdurazokzoda, Head of the Department of Water and Energy Policy, Development of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan, and Dilshodjoni Davlatshohzodai, Senior Specialist of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Executive Office of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, three representatives of the EU Nexus CA Dialogue project team:  Zafar Makhmudov, Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), Lyudmila Kiktenko, Project Manager, and Kristin Meyer, Project Coordinator from the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The participation of the delegation from Central Asian was supported by the Central Asia Nexus Dialogue project: Fostering Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus Dialogue and Multi-Sector Investment funded by European Union (the Nexus project).


The main results of the Nexus project in Central Asia, which also included nine investment project ideas developed during consultations in the countries and with acknowledged experts in the region, were presented to the meeting participants. Projects include actions on sustainable afforestation of the dried bottom of the Aral Sea, modernization of the water resources and facilities management system, restoration of irrigated lands in the Amudarya and Syrdarya river basins, integrated development of eco-and agrotourism, sustainable water and energy supply, and creation of a water-energy cooperation mechanism in Central Asia. The selection of proposals for the Phase II will continue during the Regional Steering Committee meeting of the Nexus Project in Central Asia, to be held on June 18-19, 2019 in Dushanbe and at the Final Conference of the Nexus Project in November 2019.

At the end of the meeting, the representative of the European Union confirmed the intention to support the Phase II of the program for the implementation of the pilot projects in all regions of the project. The concept and budget of the Phase II of the Program is currently being developed.
