How Is the State Environmental Monitoring System Organized in Turkmenistan? The new article examines the legal and institutional foundations of the work of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and its specialized and territorial units responsible for monitoring air quality, surface waters and the Caspian Sea, climate, forests, and biodiversity. It also analyzes existing information flows and key challenges facing the system and outlines areas for improvement, including the establishment of a unified digital platform and a State Environmental Information Fund, as well as strengthening the analytical and forecasting functions of environmental monitoring.
The RESILAND Tajikistan project is being implemented from November 2022 to September 2027 by the Center for Implementation of Investment Projects under the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. The project aims to strengthen sustainable landscape management and develop the institutional and legal framework in this area. At the regional level, the project is being supporting the development and harmonization of six regional policies on sustainable landscape management.
A national seminar on water quality standards, wastewater treatment regulations, and wastewater reuse was held in Dushanbe. The seminar was organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as part of the “Blue Peace Central Asia” (BPCA) project, with support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The seminar’s objectives included discussing priority local sanitation systems for rural areas in Tajikistan and identifying limitations in existing national standards regarding the reuse of wastewater and sludge.
When climate change is discussed, carbon dioxide is usually the first greenhouse gas that comes to mind. It is widely regarded as the main driver of global warming. However, scientists are increasingly drawing attention to another greenhouse gas — methane. Although its concentration in the atmosphere is significantly lower, methane has a much stronger impact on the climate in the short term.
