Publication date: 09 July 2025

Organization of the significant regional event within the regional component of the project “One Health for Pandemic Prevention, Food System Resilience, and Ecosystem Health in Central Asia” was discussed on 9 July 2025 in the capital of Uzbekistan.

The participants of the working meeting - Batyr Mamedov, Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), the team of the "One Health in Central Asia" project, Takahiro Hasumi, Senior Health Specialist, Europe and Central Asia, the World Bank, and Ross Hughes, Senior Environmental Specialist, Europe and Central Asia, the World Bank – discussed the further development of the regional component of the project “One Health for Pandemic Prevention, Food System Resilience, and Ecosystem Health in Central Asia.”

CAREC serves as the Regional Secretariat of the project and is responsible for coordinating intergovernmental cooperation, advancing joint initiatives, and ensuring the integration of policies in the fields of public health, sustainable land use, zoonotic disease prevention, and environmental protection.

As part of the project’s implementation, a significant regional event is planned for autumn 2025. Tentatively scheduled for late October in Dushanbe, Republic of Tajikistan, the event will gather representatives of the governments of Central Asian countries, international organizations, academia, and other key stakeholders. The aim of the meeting is to provide a platform for dialogue and coordination of actions to integrate the "One Health" approach into regional and national strategies, as well as to discuss the establishment of a Regional One Health Coordination Structure (ROHCS) — a mechanism deemed essential for addressing transboundary threats such as pandemics, climate risks, and ecosystem degradation.

This event will mark a pivotal milestone in uniting the efforts of countries in the region and strengthening cross-sectoral cooperation in the areas of public health, environment, and food security.

About the “One Health” Project:
The objective of the project is to enhance regional resilience to the threats of pandemics, ecosystem degradation, and climate change. It promotes a multisectoral approach based on the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Special emphasis is placed on the establishment of a Regional One Health Coordination Structure (ROHCS), which is a critical step toward a coordinated and systematic response across countries of the region.

The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) will continue to play a key role in ensuring collaboration among countries, coordinating activities, and expanding partnerships with international organizations for a sustainable and secure future in Central Asia.
