27 February - 3 March 2023 Regional hands-on training on " Improving data collection and data management tools for greenhouse gas inventories for Central Asian countries" will be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
It will be attended by national experts involved in greenhouse gas inventory processes from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The importance of this training is that it is practical and highly specialisedAll participants will undertake practical tasks that will help them in the future:
─ develop step-by-step instructions and checklists for national greenhouse gas inventory compilers and experts to estimate non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from the potential key categories of refrigeration and air conditioning (2.F.1) and solid waste disposal (5.A.1
─ apply step-by-step instructions for calculating greenhouse gas emissions using the IPCC 2006 methodology and other tools;
─ adopt the IPCC 2006 methodology to account for non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from the potential key categories of refrigeration and air conditioning (2.F.1) and solid waste disposal (5.A.1).
During the training, the CA experts will improve their knowledge and develop practical skills in the collection and processing of data required for improved reporting on greenhouse gas inventories. In addition, they will learn tools and approaches to calculate greenhouse gas emissions using the methodology developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2006.
The practical skills obtained are very relevant in today's realities, as Central Asian countries need to provide accurate data on greenhouse gas emissions reporting in order to meet their commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The training will be delivered by international trainer Olia Glade, Director of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) at the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI).
The Regional Practical Training is organised in the framework of the Regional Climate Action Transparency Hub for Central Asia (ReCATH). The project is implemented by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) and is an implementation of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT).
Background information:
The ReCATH project is an implementation of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), which supports countries in developing their capacity to build and manage a robust, transparent framework that enables them to effectively implement the Paris Agreement. To this end, ICAT has created a toolkit with methodologies and transparency modelling tools that can be adapted to countries' needs. Activities include direct support to countries and the establishment of regional support hubs and networks, such as the Climate Action Transparency Hub for CA countries.
The ReCATH team prepared an analysis of gaps and needs in transparency of climate action in the Central Asian region and based on this, together with experts from Central Asian countries involved in UNFCCC reporting, developed a plan for implementation of regional activities for 2022-2024 with technical support from GHGMI and other international partners. Within the framework of the plan it is planned to conduct training trainings, practical seminars on building capacity of experts of Central Asian countries (CA) in the fields of greenhouse gas inventories, adaptation, climate finance and forecast. Finalization and adaptation of tools used by international experts to improve transparency of climate reporting and its standardization.

ReCATH is implementing a collaborative approach that brings together the five Central Asian states (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) and supports technical experts and expert institutions in the region to establish sustainable and integrated measurement, reporting, verification (MRV)/transparency systems.
