CAREC participates at the 2016 Policy Dialogue on Energy for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific

25-27 April 2016, Bangkok, Thailand: The policy dialogue is organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and aims to identify driving forces that may shape the energy agenda for the coming years. Other objectives of the dialogue are to increase understanding of the underlying issues relevant to energy security and the sustainable use of energy by exchanging views on possible implications of continued low energy prices for sustainable development, strengthen linkages between the implementation of the APEF Plan of Action and other initiatives and frameworks, in particular the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Paris Agreement.

CAREC contributed to the working sessions and presented an overview of the climate policies in Central Asia, which could feed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and SDG 7 in particular, align mid-term priorities of low-carbon path to sustainable energy development, and promote South-South cooperation especially in terms of technology transfer, capacity building and resource mobilization.

CAREC suggested that its subregional platform, which maintains a dialogue on Paris and Post-Paris process at the regional level in Central Asia, could be used to complement existing ESCAP platform on sustainable energy policy dialogue in Asia and the Pacific.
