The Central Asian Environmental Forum - cooperation on sustainable development and environmental protection
June 5-7, 2017, Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) hosts the Central Asian Environmental Forum. Theme: Climate Change and Water Cooperation in the context of Sustainable Development in Central Asia
Environmental challenges of the Central Asian region go beyond the capacities of any one country or organization of the region. Combined with climate change effects, the increasing challenges are posing serious environmental threat. Dire consequences are expected if adaptation, mitigation and solution strategies are not elaborated in a timely manner and integrated into policies of the concerned governments. In this context, the annual forum will provide a platform to exchange experience for a better environment and the sustainable development of the region.

The forum aims to promote and strengthen the regional dialogue among government institutions, academia, international development community, civil society and business in Central Asia on environmental issues, outlining joint strategies for the sustainability of the region.
Participants: government officials, representatives of diplomatic missions, regional and international organizations, multilateral development banks, top environmental sector representatives, civil society, business and academia.
Objectives:
- Enhance multidisciplinary dialogue strengthening cooperation on environment and sustainable development in Central Asia
- Intensify cooperative efforts of Central Asian countries in addressing regional environmental challenges
- Formulate joint regional actions to be taken based on the discussions
- Link the actions to the global environmental agenda.

Background:
The initiative of holding CAEF resulted from the international conference «Cooperation on Environment and Sustainable Development in Central Asia» held on 21 June 2016 on the occasion of CAREC’s 15th anniversary involving a wide array of representatives from national, regional and international organizations, which provided CAREC with the mandate for organizing an annual Central Asian Environmental Forum. The forum takes place annually in different capital cities of the Central Asian region.
