Today Ramsar Regional Initiative for Central Asia (RRI-CA) Steering Committee meeting was held under leadership of Mr. Mitropolskiy M.G., Chairman of RRI-CA Steering Committee. Participants of the meeting gave review of RRI-CA activity towards wetlands and their biodiversity conservation in Central Asia, discussed RRI-CA project results and agreed upon working plan for 2022.
Background:
- The Convention on Wetlands, also called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental treaty whose mission is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national action and international cooperation as a contribution to achieving sustainable development worldwide.
- There are currently 169 countries Parties to the Convention. The number of WBU of international importance is 2,243, with a total area of 216,338,080 hectares.
- Ramsar Contracting Parties in Central Asia include Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In November 2015, three of the contracting parties (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan) agreed to a formal proposal for a Ramsar Regional Initiative for Central Asia, which was endorsed at the 52nd meeting of the Ramsar Standing Committee in June 2016.
- Today 21 wetlands in Central Asia have the status of Wetlands of International Importance - Ramsar Sites, and work is underway to add new wetlands to this list.
