New approaches for evaluation of ecosystem services in Kazakhstan – CAREC held a workshop

December 15, 2016, Shymkent (Kazakhstan) hosted a workshop «CAREC experience for evaluation of ecosystem services in Kazakhstan» in the framework of the project «Promoting the concept of the economic evaluation of water related ecosystem services in Central Asia» financed by the Norway Government.

The main objectives of the workshop were to discuss results of the project, methods of economic assessment and mapping of ecosystem services and recommendations for sustainable management of ecosystems.

More than 20 people attended the workshop, including national partners from state agencies, local administration - akimat of 4 Turkestan rural districts, the representatives of public organizations, CAREC specialists and experts.

During the event, the results of environmental and economic evaluation of ecosystem services and mapping of Ikansu watershed were presented, which were made by experts and specialists of CAREC in 2016.

At the end of the workshop, participants developed recommendations to improve the conditions of the watershed ecosystems through better land and water resources management, establishment of local pasture and water communities, dissemination of project’s experiences among the Central Asian countries.

The results of the economic evaluation and mapping of ecosystem services with experience of CAREC experts and specialists will contribute to new economic direction of the Central Asia countries as "green economy" and "calculation of natural capital".
