The Third Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC 2020) will be held online on October 19-23, 2020. The conference's objective is to strengthen a regional dialogue on climate change and sustainable development through the information and knowledge exchange in Central Asia. A series of our publications will be specifically dedicated to the speakers of the upcoming event. Today, we would like to introduce you to Mr. Massimo Cozzone, Programme Manager of WHO European Centre for Environment and Health. His joint presentation with Dr Vladimir Kendrovski “Addressing environment, climate change and health in the COVID-19 pandemic: a perspective from WHO Regional Office for Europe” will occur on October 19, 2020 as part of the CACCC 2020 first day’s thematic session.

Speaker

Massimo Cozzone, Programme Manager of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health. He earned a degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Rome in 1982. Before engaging in the environment field, he worked for ten years on nuclear and industrial installations' probabilistic safety analysis.

Massimo Cozzone joined WHO European Centre for Environment and Health as a Programme Manager on Multisectoral Partnerships for Environment and Health.

Previously, he worked in the Italian Ministry of Environment, dealing with international affairs and cooperation. He has over 20 years of experience in international cooperation and negotiations. He has also been a member of several international mechanisms and bodies within UNECE, OECD, UN, WHO and the EU.

In particular, he was a team leader for cooperation in the environmental field with Southeast Europe, Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia and the Russian Federation. He was the coordinator of the EU–Central Asia Platform on Environment and Water and Chair of its Working Group on Environment and Climate Change.

He has also been fulfilled several roles in the UNECE bodies and instruments, among them the role of the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Environmental Policy and of the Chair of the UNECE Transboundary Water Convention. He was also the National Coordinator of the UNECE Aarhus Convention, National Coordinator for the pan-European Environment and Health Process, and a member of the European Environment and Health Task Force.

He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe.

Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin or CAMP4ASB is implemented by CAREC and financed by the World Bank. Project aims to enhance regionally coordinated access to improved climate change knowledge services for key stakeholders (e.g., policy makers, communities, and civil society) in participating Central Asian countries as well as to increased investments and capacity building that, combined, will address climate challenges common to these countries.CAMP4ASB is implemented in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan during the period from 2016 to 2021.
