The activities of the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Program of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) were presented to the participants of the 13th Central Asian Leadership Program on Environment for Sustainable Development (CALP).
Young professionals in charge of climate change, water management and green development in the ministries of agriculture, ecology, water resources and energy received comprehensive information about the program; representatives of green business and civil society in Central Asia from all five Central Asian countries.
The main objective of the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy (CCSE) program is to support the national policies of Central Asian countries on climate change and sustainable energy, using the approach of low-carbon development, carbon sequestration, promoting energy efficiency and the introduction of renewable energy sources, as well as promoting approaches to adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
The program's activities during 2022-2024 include expanding the climate investment assessment mechanism, advocacy and coalition building, and improved access to information and knowledge. Particular attention was paid to the organization of the joint Pavilion of the Central Asian countries at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP28).
The main objectives of the Central Asian Pavilion at UNFCCC COP28 in Dubai (UAE) are:

Synergy: discussion of joint positions and actions, increasing efficiency, avoiding duplication

Lobbying: advocating for strategic goals and interests in the region and abroad, participating in global climate debates and negotiations, ensuring a more active presence in global climate negotiations

Capacity: strengthen knowledge and skills in climate action, policy, diplomacy, negotiation, lobbying, climate finance, carbon markets

Know-how: exchange of experience with colleagues from other countries and regions, mutual study of proven technologies and practices, gaining access to unique experiences and innovations
- Partnerships: strengthening cooperation with other countries, international partners, regional groups and sectors
The organization of the Pavilion of the Central Asian countries is carried out within the framework of the project "Strengthening the coordination and positioning of Central Asia in global climate processes", implemented by CAREC with the support of GIZ.
The CALP participants also got acquainted with the activities of the Regional Climate Action Transparency Hub for Central Asia (ReCATH) project. ReCATH is an implementation of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), which supports countries in developing their capacity to create and manage a robust transparent framework that enables them to effectively implement the Paris Agreement and facilitates countries' transition to new reporting under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (PPT). To this end, ICAT has developed transparency modelling methodologies and tools that can be adapted to the needs of countries.
The Central Asian Climate Information Portal (CACIP), which presents the Central Asian climate data database and includes E-Learning, Geoportal and a website, was presented to the CALP participants.
The E-learning is an extensive digital library on climate change issues and not only in the Central Asian region. The Geoportal provides geospatial data for the region and allows you to select the types of analytical information. The CACIP website provides a climate overview of the region and serves as a platform for navigating to other areas of the portal.
