CAREC met with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and parliamentarians of Turkmenistan
January 25, 2017, Dr. Iskandar Abdullaev, Executive Director of CAREC, met with deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, diplomats of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, senior officials of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Environmental Protection and Land Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat.

The main objective of the meeting was to discuss new ways of regional cooperation in environmental protection, ecology and sustainable development.
Dr. Abdullaev told about CAREC activities in the region, including steady development of relations with international and regional dialogue platforms, strategic plans of regional cooperation and partnership on the international arena.
He noted that the development of environmental cooperation, including water sector, is challenging without strengthening of legislative and legal frameworks of the region, and therefore the development of relations with legislative bodies from Central Asia is a strategic task. Development of the regional strategy on the sustainable use of water is not possible without the involvement of parliaments in Central Asia.
An important aspect was the information about CAREC initiative – Central Asian Environmental Forum: its aims and objectives.
CAREC aims to implement regional projects, taking into account the interests of all states in the region – this is reflected in the main principles of the organization: spread of environmental awareness and promotion of best practices for management of water resources, environment, environmental education and climate change. The main values for CAREC are effectiveness of actions and transparency of the work.
After the speech of Dr. Abdullaev, the participants made their proposals in the directions of CAREC cooperation in Turkmenistan, in particular with regional organizations. Next, the participants discussed a road map of cooperation of CAREC with parliamentarians and representatives of the foreign ministers of Central Asian countries: assessment on legislation of environmental protection for the promotion of cross-border cooperation, organizing tours to explore best practices in the field and exchange of information.
Coordinator of CAREC projects in Turkmenistan, Mr. Jumakuliev spoke about the activities of CAREC country office in Turkmenistan: directions of cooperation with the deputies of the Mejlis in the field of environmental information, coordination and collaboration activities of CAREC and partners at the regional and national levels through regional projects, assistance in implementation of national programmes of development through national projects and assistance in the implementation of Turkmenistan's obligations assumed under international agreements on environment protection.

This meeting contributed to the development of cooperation between CAREC and deputies of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the benefit of environmental issues in the region. As a result, there was a statement for further cooperation through regular meetings with a focused theme.
