Almaty, 9 October 2026. A delegation of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) visited the Kazakhstan–China Joint Laboratory of Remote Sensing Technologies and Their Applications at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

The laboratory was opened on 27 March 2024 at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of KazNU, jointly with the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and serves as a platform for monitoring natural resources in Central Asia. Its focus includes drought, water scarcity, land degradation and other impacts of climate change. Specialists use satellite data, unmanned aerial systems and lidar for aerial surveys, 3D terrain modelling and assessment of pastures, water bodies and farmland.

During the visit, the delegation reviewed the laboratory’s technical capabilities and discussed how remote sensing data can strengthen regional monitoring of climate, water resources and land degradation.
