Participants of the Regional Dialogue in Bishkek discussed the concept of a Regional Online Catalogue of Current and Forecast Transboundary Climate-Induced Natural Hazards in Central Asia. The catalogue is designed to support the collection, storage, and analysis of geospatial data, visualize climate-related hazards, and strengthen risk assessment and decision-making.
Participants discussed the proposed thematic layers of the catalogue, including hydrological hazards, glacial lakes, floods and mudflows, droughts and dust storms, satellite monitoring data, socioeconomic indicators, and historical records of hazardous natural events. Particular attention was given to data interoperability, access to information, protection of national data ownership, and the application of international standards for geospatial data exchange.
«A regional online catalogue is essential for the countries of Central Asia to systematize information resources, analyze potentially hazardous natural processes, and ultimately contribute to improving public safety and people's quality of life», said Kadyr Nazarkulov, Climate Disaster Consultant.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants agreed to continue developing the online catalogue, establish a regional technical expert group, and prepare proposals on priority datasets and information sources. They also agreed to explore the integration of the catalogue and the Regional Roadmap into national climate change adaptation plans.
From June 24 to 26, representatives of Central Asian countries met in Bishkek to discuss joint solutions for reducing mudflow and flood risks, strengthening natural hazard monitoring systems, and enhancing regional cooperation in the context of climate change.
The Regional Dialogue, “Harmonizing Policies, Developing a Roadmap and Digital Tools for Coordinated Joint Efforts,” was held under the Central Asia Resilient Landscapes Restoration Program (RESILAND CA+), supported by the World Bank. The event was organized by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic in partnership with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).
About the RESILAND CA+ Program
The Central Asia Resilient Landscapes Restoration Program (RESILAND CA+) is financed by the World Bank with support from the the Global Partnership for Sustainable and Resilient Landscapes (PROGREEN) and the Korea World Bank Partnership Facility (KWPF).
The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) implements the regional component of the RESILAND projects in the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
