Countries of Central Asia Prepare for COP27. Current Status

September 27 - Almaty – The Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) hosted the Fourth Regional Meeting of the Working Group on Preparation for the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The meeting gathered together officials of the relevant ministries and departments for the environment, environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as representatives of the international organizations and CAREC.

The meeting is a part of the COP27 preparation series in Central Asia to discuss current organization and content.

On September 27, participants exchanged information on the progress of the countries' preparations for COP 27. CAREC reported its advance in preparations for COP27 and intentions to hold joint side events with EC IFAS in the Water Pavilion. CAREC also informed about the current state of three regional statements at COP 27 to be provided by countries, young leaders and NGOs in Central Asia. These statements would communicate the region's success in the Paris Agreement's implementation to the international community.

The draft regional statement on behalf of countries of Central Asia was presented at the Seventh Meeting of Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Parliamentarians held in Almaty on September 20, 2022. At the meeting, the representatives of foreign ministries and parliamentarians agreed on the phased approval of the document by the countries by the end of October 2022.

Manager of Education for Sustainable Development Programme, Tatiana Shakirova, informed about the preparation of the regional statement on behalf of youth within the framework of the Central Asian Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development (CALP). The first draft of the statement will be delivered at the Ninth Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference in Nicosia, Cyprus, October 5-7, 2022.

In turn, the representatives of five Central Asian countries reported that the countries are actively preparing for COP27, and national delegations are being formed at the moment.

The participants proposed to hold regular meetings on preparations for COP27 every week.
