CAREC and FAO Tajikistan. Food Security and Climate Resilience

Our dialogue with FAO in Tajikistan creates valuable opportunities to jointly address the interconnected challenges of agriculture, food security, and climate change. By combining our efforts, CAREC and FAO can make meaningful contributions to the sustainability of ecosystems across Central Asia, supporting shared prosperity for the people of the region,” the Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), Batyr Mammedov, stated in follow-up to the working meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

On 3 September 2025, the CAREC delegation and representatives of FAO in Tajikistan held a working meeting in Dushanbe.

The parties discussed a broad agenda for collaboration, focusing on food security, climate resilience, and the large-scale One Health Project.

Representatives of FAO in Tajikistan outlined its current and planned initiatives, which include:

-      Zoonotic disease prevention and control

-      Strengthening veterinary and laboratory systems

-      Food safety and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) management

-      Reducing pesticide use and promoting sustainable agricultural practices

-      устойчивостью (AMR).

CAREC showcased its ongoing regional initiatives including:

-      Climate Action Transparency (ReCATH project): supporting national greenhouse gas inventory systems and reporting;

-      Methane Emission Reduction (CA CBMER and Waste Methane projects): assisting Central Asian nations in the energy, agriculture, and waste management sectors;

-      Forestry and Ecosystem Cooperation: fostering regional exchange and alignment on sustainable natural resource use.

The meeting highlighted preparations for the upcoming global climate event — the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, where Central Asia aims to strengthen its regional voice on the global climate summit.

CAREC and FAO in Tajikistan emphasized the importance of joint efforts to promote regional interests and enhance the visibility of Central Asia at international forums.

Following the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to closer coordination at both national and regional levels in line with Tajikistan’s priorities in environmental protection, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience.
