First steps of the National Climate Network of Uzbekistan

Publication date: 26 February 2024

In the office of the branch of the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) in Uzbekistan, meetings of professional ecologists, NGO activists, volunteers, scientists, journalists and employees of the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan were held for the second time. The process of creating the National Climate Network is being carried out with the support of the Eco movement.

Recall that in 2019, at the initiative of the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC), the Central Asian Regional Climate Network was created, which includes a national network of civil society organizations in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

At the moment, civil society is seeking to intensify its contribution to sustainable development in the face of climate change. Face-to-face and online discussions of the Regulation on the National Climate Network were held in Uzbekistan, which was approved. The coordinator of the network was elected for two years. It was the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Central Council of the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan Saidrasul Sanginov.

It is too early to predict what the climate network will be like in the future. At the initial stage, there is an exchange of experience and information. The hottest topic discussed during the meetings was the results of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP28) and preparations for the next COP29.

An equally relevant topic related to the problems of climate change indirectly is the collection and recycling of electronic waste. Now, there is massive environmental pollution in the country, which is exacerbated by climate risks, and the task of climate activists is to draw the attention of decision-makers to the existing problems.
