Central Asian and Afghanistan Network of Women in Water Management Participates in Second Global Forum Women in Water Diplomacy

Publication date: 18 March 2024

The Central Asian and Afghanistan Network of Women in Water Management actively participated in the Second Global Forum Women in Water Diplomacy held in Vienna, Austria, 3-8 March 2024. This network, established within the OSCE funded programme "Women, Water, and Conflict Prevention," received support from the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) at the global level and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in the region.

Representing the Central Asian region and the Aral Sea basin, Tais Reznikova, CAREC Water Initiatives Support Program Manager, showcased the network's efforts in a format of the World Café on March 3, 2024. Attendees from various transboundary basins, including the Nile, Orange Senqu, and Colorado River basins, had the opportunity to delve into the unique challenges faced by Central Asia. Tais Reznikova highlighted concerns such as the projected water deficit of 5-12 km3 in the Aral Sea Basin starting from 2028-2029, as assessed by the EDB in 2023.

During discussions with members of the CA&A Network, attention was drawn to the implementation of the Global Strategy "A Path Forward for Women, Water, Peace, and Security" in the Central Asia region. Additionally, potential avenues for collaboration with other basins were explored.

On March 6, 2024, Tais Reznikova presented CAREC's experiences in empowering youth during the session "Leading Collectively across Generations for Inclusive Water Diplomacy: Inspiring Stories of Women from around the World." She highlighted the significance of joint learning experiences, such as the exchange to the Senegal River Basin, as valuable examples of intergenerational dialogue. This exchange underscored the importance of bridging the visible gap in both youth interest in the water sector and their engagement in decisions related to water resources in Central Asia.
