Carbon Farming in Kazakhstan and Private Investment

Publication date: 05 December 2023

Dubai – UAE – The COP8 CA Pavilion gave insight into the unique soil carbon sequestration project of EcoBalance Global at the side event “Developing Carbon Farming in Kazakhstan: Opportunities for Private Investment in the Voluntary Carbon Market”.

The project is implemented in Kazakhstan’s pasturelands. The soil carbon sequestration includes, alongside other tools, rotational grazing practices, and the marketing of carbon credits. The soil carbon sequestration is a pilot project. If it succeeds it will commercialize the product throughout Kazakhstan. Developers believe that the project will create a new environmentally-oriented industry that benefits not only Kazakhstan but the entire world.

Besides, they presented a private afforestation project in the Almaty region of Kazakhstan. The discussed issues included:

- Development of forest ecosystems in the context of the Strategy for Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Kazakhstan;

- Increasing Kazakhstan's forest cover by introducing a forest ecosystem and an integrated model of sustainable agriculture that rejuvenates eroded and degraded lands;

- Financial framework to encourage investment in afforestation projects.

The side event organizers are Rakurs Tech, EBG/KazBeef, SAFC.
