The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) will host the side events on Central Asia’s response to climate challenges at the 27th Conference of Parties (COP27) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Sharm el-Sheikh.
The side events will gather representatives of the relevant government agencies of Central Asia, international organizations and financial partners and donors, civil society and youth of the countries of Central Asia as well.
At the global climate summit, the CAREC will hold the side-events in the Pavilion of the Republic of Tajikistan organized by the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan (CEP RT) and in the Water Pavilion organized by the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (EC IFAS) on 9-16 November 2022.

November 9, 2022. The side event “The Eighth Meeting of Representatives of Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Parliamentarians of the Countries of Central Asia "Towards Regional Coherence and Cooperation of the Central Asian Countries on Climate Policy, Finance, and NDC Implementation". The Pavilion of the Republic of Tajikistan will host the first part of the meeting. The Water Pavilion will host the second part.
«The Regional Statement of the countries will be voiced to the world community and the development partners of the Central Asian region. The Statements declares the region’s current climate change issues and proposes the joint mitigation and adaptation actions,” said Irina Bekmirzaeva, Manager of the Climate Change&Sustainable Energy Program.
The meeting will cover such issues as a coherence of climate-related regional goals and initiatives, water-climate connections in respective policies and strategies of the countries of Central Asia, coordinated mobilization of climate finance, and the progress in NDC.
November 10, 2022. The side-event “Young leaders of Central Asia on the way to carbon”. The Pavilion of the Republic of Tajikistan.
“The event will showcase the regional initiatives of Central Asian youth - graduates of the Central Asian Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development (CALP) and the Working Group of the First Regional Youth Conference on Climate and Water in Central Asia ((RCOY CA) - on climate change and carbon neutrality at the global, regional and national levels. The joint Regional Statement of the Youth of Central Asia will be voiced at the side event. The participants will discuss the need for capacity-building, exchange of experiences and learning on climate change adaptation and mitigation,” said Tatyana Shakirova, Manager of Education for Sustainable Development Program, CAREC.
November 11, 2022. The side-event “Regional climate action transparency cooperation”. The Pavilion of the Republic of Tajikistan.
“The side event will discuss and address climate transparency issues at the subnational and regional levels. We will discuss the implementation plan of the CAREC’s Climate Transparency Centre funded by the Initiative for Climate Transparency Action (ICAT), the main gaps and the transparency needs of the five participating project countries of the region. We will present the results of the gap and needs analysis of the countries of the region in the areas of inventory, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and climate finance, together with recommendations to improve the capacity of countries in these areas. A strong framework for climate transparency establishes national ownership, and facilitates the involvement of relevant stakeholders in policy processes and accountability at the national and international levels, including the implementation of the Paris Agreement obligations, as well as ensuring policy and financial efficiency.
The identification and further development of Internal benefits and synergies from increased transparency of climate change actions, including the use of data and information, will assist the project countries in mobilizing funding from international sources and will help to stimulate economic recovery during emergencies and crises.
Also, the Regional Statement representing the consolidated position of the Central Asian civil society on addressing climate change issues with the participation of NGOs will be voiced at the side-event,” said Raushan Syzdykova, ReCATH Project manager, CAREC.
On the same day, the side-event “Central Asian Experience: Resources Efficiency in Agri-food Production and Processing (REAP)”. The Pavilion of the Republic of Tajikistan.
The event will gather key participants of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) of agri-food production and processing in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. They will discuss initiatives for sustainable consumption and production (SCP) and resource efficiency in the region.
“We will tell the side-event participants how the REAP project may help MSMEs save resources by using SCP methodology during agri-food production and how REAP project can help the agri-food production and processing MSMEs in the implementation of resource-saving measures through SCP methodology. We will provide detailed information about how the REAP will work with wider stakeholders in strengthening the ecosystem for MSMEs to adapt SCP technologies in the Central Asia region,” said Valeriya Orlova, REAP project manager.
November 16, 2022. The international side-event “Catalyzing youth action for climate and water”. The Water Pavilion.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Center of Global Education, Canada (CGETIG), EC IFAS, and CAREC will organize the side event to discuss the youth’s role in climate change action.
Particular attention will be given to intergenerational stories on climate, partnerships and collaboration among youth networks and platforms, and projections beyond 2030. The side event will present the Regional Statement of the Youth of Central Asia and will showcase the success stories of the CALP Alumni Network.
