The workshop is being held from 19 to 22 October 2026 in Ashgabat under the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) project entitled “Enhancing Turkmenistan’s Capacity to Access Climate Finance through Capacity Building and Strategic Frameworks.”
The workshop focuses on strengthening capacity for the development of GCF-funded projects, validating the implementation plan and investment plan of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and reviewing the Environmental Assessment Report on the Aral Sea.
Participants are discussing ways to strengthen the country’s institutional and technical readiness to access climate finance, improve climate expenditure tracking systems, and develop and implement initiatives aimed at climate change mitigation and adaptation. Particular attention is being given to the agriculture, forestry, and other land use sectors.
According to Mergen Kepbanov, strengthening capacity and aligning strategic documents with the country’s practical needs are essential for developing high-quality climate projects and expanding access to international climate finance.
The Director of the CAREC Project Office in Turkmenistan also noted that knowledge exchange among government institutions, international organizations and other stakeholders helps strengthen cooperation and create favourable conditions for implementing climate initiatives.
