CXOP27. Eighth meeting of MFAS and members of parliament of CA

November 9 - Sharm el-Sheikh - Egypt - The Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) together with the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (EC IFAS) held the 8th meeting of representatives of the ministries of foreign affairs and parliamentarians of Central Asian countries “Towards a regional coherence and cooperation of the countries of Central Asia in the field of climate policy, finance and implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)” at COP-27 of the UNFCCC.

Representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and parliaments of the Central Asian countries, UNFCCC coordinators in Central Asia, members of national delegations, as well as representatives of international organizations, diplomatic missions, civil society, business, regional and national experts took part in its work.

The meeting was held in a two-part format:

·       Part I took place in the Pavilion of the Republic of Tajikistan and was devoted to discussing the issues of coherence of regional goals and initiatives in the field of climate, water-climate relations in the relevant policies and strategies of the countries of Central Asia. The participants emphasized the need for coordinated mobilization of climate finance and provided information on progress in NDCs implementation, including activities to improve legislation, institutional frameworks and climate policy implementation.

·       Part II of the event was arranged in Water Pavilion. The participants discussed the main achievements of the countries of Central Asia on the way to carbon neutrality and climate adaptation within the framework of the NDCs undertaken, water-climate links in the relevant policies and strategies of the CA countries.

During the meeting, a regional statement “Voice of Central Asia” was made on behalf of the governments of the Central Asian countries.

The statement outlines the general problems of climate change in the region and suggests steps to adapt and mitigate the climate change effects.
