Glasgow, Great Britain, November 3, 2021 г. – Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) hosted the next side-event entitled “Key aspects and needs for funding, technology, capacity building, international expertise and the role of civil society in Central Asia under Nationally Determined Contributions” in Central Asia Pavilion in online and offline mode.

In a welcome speech, CAREC Executive Director Zafar Makhmudov emphasized the urgency of Central Asia Pavilion united under the motto “5 countries – 1 region – 1 voice”.

“We designed COP26 Central Asia Pavilion to raise awareness about Central Asia and its investment capacities opportunities, role in global climate process, prospects and current needs in the financing, technology exchange and cooperation opportunities,” stated Zafar Makhmudov.

CAREC Executive Director called for leveraging of Central Asia Pavilion opportunities. “It is opportunities, chances, hopes and capacity. It is a resource to be used fully. Also, we speak about multilateralism, a principle of cooperation aimed at tackling a wide range of global and regional issues based on multilateral consultations and agreements,” stressed Zafar Makhmudov.

According to him, the union of Central Asian countries provides opportunities for climate diplomacy to define climate policy and mitigate climate change supporting low-carbon and climate-resilient development in close partnership of the governments with non-governmental organizations.

“We need to aim our actions for sustainable development of the region,” said CAREC Executive Director. He expressed a hope that the countries of Central Asia will develop plans for the next Conference of Parties.

At the side-event, the countries of Central Asia presented updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

At the end of the event, Policy Action for Climate Security in Central Asia long-term program was presented. It envisages the development of voluntary strategy by the governments to integrate climate change mitigation and social-economic development into the national policies. The core aim of the strategy is to identify potential national low-emission pathways based on synergies between climate change and economic development with considerable co-benefits.

Central Asia Pavilion is organized by CAREC in cooperation with EC IFAS and IGTIPC under financial support of the World Bank, OSCE, ERG, FAO and UNDP.
