Nexus Game at AlmaU: Introducing Young People to the Interconnections Between Natural Resources

Publication date: 23 October 2026

On 22 October, the Nexus Game was held for students at Almaty Management University (AlmaU). The event took place as part of Youth Action Day — PreCOP31, within the framework of the 4th International SDSN Kazakhstan Conference, “Accelerating the SDGs: Science, Partnerships and Action.”

Ten students participated in the game, exploring the interconnections between water, energy and food resources in an interactive format. They also learned how decisions in one of these sectors can affect the others.

The Nexus Game helps participants better understand the complexity of natural resource management, the importance of cross-sectoral cooperation, and the need to consider different interests when making decisions. Through this interactive format, students were introduced to the Nexus approach and its role in sustainable development.

The session was facilitated by Aisha Mukhamedrakhim, Environmental Management Programme Specialist at the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).

Holding the game at AlmaU was part of broader efforts to promote the Nexus approach among young people and advance practical environmental education in Central Asia. Initiatives like this help raise students’ awareness of the interconnections between natural resources and the importance of coordinated decision-making in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

CAREC continues to support educational initiatives aimed at strengthening young people’s environmental competencies and promoting sustainable natural resource management across Central Asia.
