United Region. Common Position. Single Voice of Central Asia. COP27

On October 12, 2022, the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) hosted an online regional meeting to agree on the draft of the Regional Statement “Voice of Central Asia” on behalf of the Central Asian governments.

The negotiated Regional Statement will be voiced at the 27th Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, November 2022).

The meeting gathered representatives of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan designated by the governments of Central Asia for the development of the Regional Statement, and the officials of international organizations.

They deliberated on the draft statement and made proposals and recommendations for further consideration, revision and approval by the countries through diplomatic channels of the countries of Central Asia, as appropriate. 

According to the Manager of Climate Change&Sustainable Energy Program/Coordinator of the CAMP4ASB Project, Irina Bekmirzaeva, the Regional Statement is initiated by the countries of Central Asia and formulated at the dialogue platform of the Foreign Ministries and Parliamentarians of Central Asia.

The participants underlined the importance of the Regional Statement “Voice of Central Asia” as a demonstration of the common position of all countries of Central Asia at COP27. It will call the attention of the world community and international financial institutions to the vulnerability of the region, emphasize the readiness of the Central Asian countries to strengthen international cooperation on the measures taken by the countries of the region to adapt to and mitigate climate change and to strengthen regional cooperation on transboundary issues, as well as to attract climate financing in the region.

The draft Regional Statement following the meeting will be submitted for further approval to the ministries of foreign affairs of the countries of Central Asia.

Recall the first draft of the Regional Statement “Voice of Central Asia” was developed on  September 15, 2022; and presented at the seventh meeting of representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and parliamentarians of the Central Asian countries on climate change in Almaty, Kazakhstan, September 20, 2022. At the meeting, all countries of Central Asia supported the need and desirability of developing the Regional Statement. The work continues in accordance with the procedures and timeframe.
