“As international experience shows, effective emissions reduction starts with accurate assessment and the availability of reliable data. We need to better understand the sources of emissions, their scale and dynamics, and have the ability to compare different sources of information,” said Alisher Salomov, Adviser to the Chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, at National Workshop on Strengthening Methane Emissions Monitoring and Assessment in Uzbekistan: National Workshop on Project Results, Lessons Learned, and Future Opportunities held in Tashkent.
As Alisher Salomov noted, improving the monitoring and assessment of methane emissions, enhancing the quality and accessibility of data, and developing modern monitoring tools are important conditions for making informed decisions on environmental protection and climate change mitigation in Uzbekistan.
In this context, the work carried out under the UzEMI project is highly timely and of practical importance for the country. The project applied modern approaches, including satellite monitoring; compared the data obtained with available national information; reviewed the existing regulatory and legal framework; and developed recommendations for further improving methane emissions monitoring and assessment.
Alisher Salomov emphasized that the UzEMI project focused not only on generating new data, but also on its practical application, the development of national expertise, and the improvement of methodological and regulatory approaches.
“Uzbekistan highly values its established cooperation with CAREC and is interested in further strengthening it,” Alisher Salomov said in his remarks. He also underscored the importance of international and regional cooperation in developing national systems for monitoring and assessing methane emissions.
Highlighting the relevance of the “Enhauncing Uzbekistan’s Methane Inventories” (UzEMI) project, Alisher Salomov, Adviser to the Chairman of the National Committee for Ecology and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, expressed his gratitude to the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), and Green University.
