Green Investments: 5 Countries – 1 Region – 1 Voice

Glasgow, Great Britain, November 3, 2021 – COP 26 Central Asia Pavilion “5 countries – 1 region – 1 voice” hosted the side-event “Unlocking Green Investments” in an online and offline format. 

The event was organized jointly with the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC), UNDP Kazakhstan.

Representatives of government agencies, NGOs, experts, economists, scientists visited the event. 

Deputy Director of Climate Policy and Green Technologies Department at the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan (MEGNR RK), Ainur Kopbayva, noted that greening of the economy and environmental protection is one of the main principles of a new economy course of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The country has a legal basis for green growth and the renewable energy market is developing at an impressive pace. To the moment there are 126 renewable energy facilities with a total installed capacity of 1975 MW which is twice as much as in 2019. 

The Environmental Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan provides for financial tools to develop green technologies. Deputy Director of Climate Policy and Green Technologies Department at the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan (MEGNR RK), Ainur Kopbayva stressed, “Kazakhstan is open for dialogue and interaction with financial institutions to implement green projects and attract green investments.”

Advisor at AIFC Green Finance Center, Assel Nurakhmetova, presented AIFC GFC as a development institution focused on green financing and environmental investments across Kazakhstan and Central Asia. 

International Technical Advisor on Green Technologies at UNDP, Oleg Khmelyov, introduced the experience of UNDP in providing green financing for Kazakhstan. According to him, they implemented over 90 initiatives. Their benefits were improving the quality of life, reducing gender inequality, creating jobs and improving the energy management system of buildings. 

Central Asia Pavilion is organized by CAREC in cooperation with EC IFAS and IGTIPC under financial support of the World Bank, OSCE, ERG, FAO and UNDP.
