Joint Meeting of Small Basin Councils of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on the Isfara River

On May 24, 2017, a joint meeting of Small Basin Councils of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on the transboundary river Isfara was held in Isfara, Tajikistan.


CAREC supports meetings of the Small Basin Councils in the framework of Smart Waters project under financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Ms. Gulzada Azhetova, leader of the USAID water resources sector, Shomirsaidov Rustam and Mamadiev Doranbek, chairmen of the Tajik and Kyrgyz parts of the SBC on the Isfara river welcomed participants of the meeting. The main issues on the agenda were to discuss activities carried out within the project framework in 2016, planned work schedule for 2017, implementation of basin plans, ways to improve cooperation between the State administration on melioration and irrigation of the Isfara and the Rayon water management organization of Batken, celebration of the Isfara River Day in 2017.

To date SBC members on both sides actively cooperate with international organizations and donors working in the Isfara river basin: United Kingdom Aid program, Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), which support the restoration of irrigation facilities, rational natural resources management, etc.

SBC members thanked CAREC for the support of their work, provided opportunities to engage the public in improvement of the economic situation and to solve issues related to use of water resources in the basin.
