«Water for sustainable development» was the theme of the republican conference supported by CAREC
March 16, 2017, enhancing awareness on upcoming decade on water for sustainable development was the focus of the CAREC-supported conference for more than 135 representatives of states, national water authorities, water basin councils, academia and international organizations that was held in Dushanbe.
The event was organized by the Smart Waters project team with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with the Ministry of energy and water resources of the Republic of Tajikistan.
Participants discussed:
- State and prospects of water sector development
- International decade for action "Water for sustainable development" (2018-2028)
- Role of water in the social and economic development of Tajikistan
- National water strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan
- Contribution of young scientists to the development of the water sector and retraining
The event was a part of CAREC’s long-term efforts to introduce integrated water resources management principles into the national water framework and enhance the capacity of state institutions in the area of water governance.
“Currently, the energy and water resource management are leading sectors of Tajikistan economy though the level of knowledge and skills should be appropriate. Therefore, it is very important to pay special attention to the system of higher education and retrainig: the level of material and technical support, personnel, as well as the quality of educational programs,”
said Usmonali Usmozoda, Minister of energy and water resources.
“Building the younger generation’s capacity is an important part of promoting sustainable water resources management in line with best international standards,”
said Katherine Crawford, USAID Country Office Director in Tajikistan.

2018-2028 declared the International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development". The corresponding resolution, put forward at the initiative of Tajikistan in co-authorship with 177 UN member states, was adopted on December 21, 2016 at a plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly.
