On April 10, 2025, a final conference of the UNDP/GCF project "Development of the national adaptation planning process in Turkmenistan" was held in Ashgabat. The conference marked an important step in the development of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Roadmap and the Adaptation Financing Concept, which will play a key role in enhancing the country's resilience to climate change.
The conference was opened with welcome remarks by Narine Saakyan, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan, and Charygeldi Babaniyazov, Minister of Environment Protection of Turkmenistan.
At the first session, participants discussed strategic planning and international cooperation in climate change adaptation, as well as Turkmenistan's role in global climate initiatives.
During the second session, the focus was on the next steps for implementing the NAP, as well as mechanisms for financing climate projects. Participants discussed the concept of climate financing and the Green Taxonomy, and drew the attention of investors and the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan to potential avenues for resource mobilization.
One of the important moments of the event was a solemn ceremony of handing over training materials designed to raise awareness of specialists in the field of water management planning and adaptation to climate change.
The training materials were presented by Charyyarkuli Taganov, national expert, and handed over to representatives of leading educational and scientific institutions, including the Turkmen State Water Management Research, Production and Design Institute «Тurkmensuvylymtaslama», Magtymguly Turkmen State University, the Turkmen Agricultural University Named After S.A. Niyazov, and the Turkmen State Agricultural Institute in Dashoguz city.
At the conclusion of the conference, Mergen Kepbanov, Director Regional Environmental Centre of Central Asia (CAREC) Project Office in Turkmenistan, emphasized the importance of active cooperation of all stakeholders for the successful implementation of climate initiatives.
“Efficient use of resources and development of institutions are key factors for the country's resilience in the face of climate change,” emphasized Mergen Kepbanov.
