CAREC – EU: Strategic Cooperation in Central Asia

At a meeting with the Head of Cooperation at the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Johannes Baur, the Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) Batyr Mammedov highlighted the vital role of the European Union in promoting regional cooperation in Central Asia on water governance, climate change, and the development of renewable energy sources.

The meeting was held in the CAREC office in Almaty (Kazakhstan) on 19 September 2025. Participants noted that CAREC and the European Union share a long and fruitful history of cooperation through various projects and initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development in the region.

The parties also discussed current and future cooperation priorities in key areas such as water resources management, energy, and climate change. the Head of Cooperation at the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Johannes Baur, shared the latest updates on ongoing initiatives and projects supported by the EU, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and coordination at the regional level.

Dilovarsho Dustzoda, Advisor to the Executive Director, and Ludmilla Kiktenko, Manager of the Environmental Management Program at CAREC, provided insights into the Centre’s development prospects and outlined the achievements and results of EU-funded projects implemented in recent years.

Both sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in strengthening the strategic partnership and implementing new initiatives aimed at ensuring a sustainable and environmentally secure future for the region.
