ALMATY, Kazakhstan, 1 April 2026. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) are holding a regional seminar on the system and market integration of variable renewable energy in Central Asia on 1-2 April 2026 in Almaty. The event is taking place at Satbayev University and brings together representatives of government agencies, system operators, national energy companies, technical universities, and industry associations from across the region. The meeting was organized within the framework of the OSCE Regional Task Force on Education for a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition (RTEET) in Central Asia, under the OSCE project “Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment in the Energy Sector in Central Asia.” As part of this initiative, a regional training course on renewable energy integration is also being developed, covering key technical, regulatory, and market aspects of the energy transition.
The seminar focuses on issues that are becoming increasingly important for Central Asian countries amid the energy transition and the growing share of solar and wind generation. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are actively developing large-scale renewable energy projects, while Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, with their significant hydropower potential, are also gradually expanding the integration of new renewable energy sources. This increases the need for joint solutions in balancing power systems and enhancing their flexibility and resilience.
The aim of the seminar is to strengthen the capacity of key stakeholders to identify practical solutions for renewable energy integration in the areas of policy, market mechanisms, and technology. Special attention is given to human capital development, expanding educational opportunities, and supporting a just and inclusive energy transition in the region. The seminar also contributes to promoting gender equality in the energy sector within the framework of the OSCE project on advancing women’s economic empowerment in the energy sector of Central Asia.
The programme includes discussions on renewable energy policy and support mechanisms, electricity market design, technical aspects of integrating variable renewable energy into power systems, as well as modelling tools and sector coupling. Participants and speakers include representatives of relevant ministries, system operators, industry associations, and international experts.
Holding this regional dialogue reflects the commitment of Central Asian countries to strengthening co-operation in sustainable energy and preparing qualified professionals for a low-carbon future. The seminar provides a platform for exchanging knowledge, best practices, and developing joint approaches to integrating renewable energy sources into the region’s power systems.
