Results of the side-event of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) and REC Caucasus "Education for Sustainable Development and its role in promoting Regional platforms for Greening the Economies of Central Asia and the Caucasus"

October 5 –  the Republic of Cyprus – Nicosia – the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) organized the side event "Education for Sustainable Development and its role in promoting regional platforms for greening the economies of Central Asia and the Caucasus", in cooperation with the REC of Caucasus and the Central Asian countries, on the platform of the Conference - in the Cyprus Institute.

The event was conducted in a hybrid format and brought together participants from the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus and was held under the auspices of the partnership of two regional organizations - CAREC and REC Caucasus, and involving the CA governments, civil society organizations and partners.

More than 30 people took part in the side event. Welcoming messages were delivered by representatives of the environmental agencies of the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus: Ms. Nino Gokhelashvili – National Coordinator on ESD in Georgia; Kazakhstan – Ms. Zulfiya Suleimenova – Vice-Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, and Kyrgyzstan – Mr. Turar Kanaev. Director of the Department of International Cooperation.

The side event presented the achievements of CAREC in the field of ESD and green economy: the role of regional platforms and initiatives in strengthening regional cooperation, ESD, leadership, WEFE-NEXUS approach, and the Central Asia Climate Information Portal (CACIP) was demonstrated.

Partners from Georgia and the REC Caucasus shared their unique experience in the field of environmental education for sustainable development and the ecological footprint of the application of natural solutions and ESD to achieve theAgenda-2030 in the South Caucasus.

One of the important results of the side-event was the understanding and recognition of the importance of cooperation between the regions of the Caucasus and Central Asia, and of the exchange of experiences, good practices and expertise on the topics of ESD and green development.

Additionally, Nodira Dzhanibekova, Deputy of the Oliy Majlis of the Parliament of Uzbekistan, and Danara Saranova, UN volunteer, reported the process and the content of preparation of the regional statement of youth on climate change for the presentation at the UN FCCC COP-27.

From October 4 to October 7, 2022, CAREC delegation headed by Executive Director Zafar Makhmudov takes part in the Ninth “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference under the slogan “Transforming the Planet” in Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus (https://nicosiaefe.gov.cy/).
