Post-COP28 UNFCCC. Central Asia in the Climate Change Negotiation Process on the World Stage

Tashkent – Uzbekistan – On 10 February 2024, a meeting of the Central Asian countries will take place in follow up the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change "Central Asia at the Climate Change Negotiations: COP28 Outcomes and Plans for COP29".

The upcoming meeting will pay special attention to an issue relevant to the entire Central Asian region - the possibility of creating a regional group of negotiators of Central Asian countries in the UNFCCC meetings. This is necessary to strengthen the region's representation in the global climate arena.

Other significant issues for discussion will be the results and achievements of the Central Asian countries as a result of participation in COP-28 of the UNFCCC, UNFCCC COP29 Roadmap for the Central Asian Region, enhancing regional cooperation on climate change in Central Asian countries, transparency of climate action in the fight against climate change in Central Asia, in which CAREC will act as a regional hub.

The event will convene the heads of government agencies of the Central Asian countries responsible for climate change, national coordinators of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change from the countries of Central Asia (UNFCCC), representatives of the ministries of foreign affairs of the Central Asian countries, activists from non-governmental, academic, scientific, youth and other organizations dealing with climate change issues, partners and representatives of international organizations. 

The event is organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) together with the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Central Asian Green University within the framework of the “Dialogue of Central Asian countries on joint preparations for UNFCCC COP28”.

Brief note:

In November 2023, in Dubai (UAE), the countries of Central Asia took part in the UNFCCC COP28 and the work of the Central Asia Pavilion, united under the slogan “5 countries - 1 region - 1 voice”. 

In the Pavilion, the countries of the Central Asian region demonstrated solidarity in the fight against climate change, spoke about the national priorities of each country, and its position in the negotiation process and outlined the common interests of the region at the UNFCCC COP28.

The Pavilion “5 countries – 1 region – 1 voice” provided a unique opportunity for the countries of Central Asia to show their investment potential, their role in the global climate process, prospects and existing needs for financing, technology and expertise. 

The Central Asian Pavilion “5 countries – 1 region – 1 voice” was organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in cooperation with the Governments of Central Asian countries under financial support of the GIZ, OSCE, the World Bank, USAID, the European Union, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan
