On August 8, in Almaty, representatives of the national climate and environmental networks of Central Asian countries, together with representatives of the youth of the region, discussed the mechanisms for the preparation, structure and thematic recommendations for the Regional Statement on behalf of civil society and youth of Central Asian countries at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP28).
The discussion took place during the Strategic Meeting of the Central Asia Civil Society Climate Network, which takes place in a hybrid format on 8-9 August 2023 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The public association “ECOM” (Pavlodar, Kazakhstan) organized the meeting with the support of the GLOBAL GREENGRANTS FUND and the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) within the framework of the Regional Dialogue of Central Asian countries on joint preparations for COP28 of the UNFCCC.
The strategic meeting brought together representatives of the national climate networks of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan based on the gender balance of participants and the representativeness of youth.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and CAREC international expert Alexei Kokorin gave a detailed overview of the UNFCCC COP28 agenda. He outlined the main goals, objectives and key areas for improving the effectiveness of the goal-setting of the Regional Statement on behalf of civil society and youth of Central Asian countries.
CAREC Regional Climate Change Specialist Vladimir Grebnev spoke about the joint preparation of Central Asian countries for UNFCCC COP28, including two regional statements, a single pavilion of Central Asian countries and increasing the productivity of Central Asian countries' participation in negotiations at UNFCCC COP28.
During the meeting, the participants were also presented with reviews of national climate policies and mechanisms for civil society participation in their development and implementation. Such a discussion provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and draw ideas for the work of the network at both the national and regional levels.
The Climate Civil Society Network of Central Asia (CSCD CA) is an informal, voluntary association of national climate and environmental networks of Central Asian countries, created for the free exchange of information, dialogue and discussion on environmental and climate policy and the development of climate action by the public. CSCD CA was established as an independent Regional Association of the Network of Environmental and Climate Organizations based on the RNCSO (Regional Network of Civil Society Organizations) initiated by CAREC in 2019.
