COP26. Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia nominated for Prince William Earthshot Prize

Glasgow, UK, 11 November 2021 – Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia nominated for Prince William Earthshot Prize. This was reported by CAREC Executive Director Zafar Makhmudov at the Final meeting of national delegations of Central Asian countries held in the Central Asia Pavilion “5 countries – 1 region – 1 voice” in online and offline format.

The Earthshot Prize is awarded annually for contributions to environmentalism under the five categories: 'the restoration and protection of nature', 'air cleanliness', 'ocean revival', 'waste-free living', and 'climate action'.

Collier John Bryan, Senior Environment Specialist, World Bank Regional Office for Central Asia, congratulated CAREC with its nomination for the Prince William Prize. He also congratulated the participants of the event with the landmark achievement, the unification of the region at the UNFCCC COP26.

He highlighted the significance of regional statements to COP, where governments and civil society emphasized the consolidated position in joining forces to respond effectively to the challenge of climate change. According to him, this is great because the challenge of reaching carbon neutrality cannot be met unless we are all together government civil society development organizations and individuals on the street, driver cars.

Collier John Bryan wished the countries of Central Asia to be active in important work to improve legislation and implement adaptation measures. He emphasized once again the importance of the CA Pavilion.

Alessandra Fidanza, an international consultant on environment and climate change, stated that multilateralism already works in Central Asia. “Central Asia is already ready to show to the world how to work well together and to speak as one only voice in the international arena,” said Alessandra Fidanza.

“The Central Asian States as one voice are ready to cooperate with the international community to advance even more in the fight against climate change and showing to the world how positive it can be to take the challenge by climate change and turn it into opportunities of building together a more sustainable future,” Alessandra Fidanza summed up and thanked CAREC for organizing this amazing CA Pavilion.

The event was organized by Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in cooperation with Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of Kyrgyz Republic, Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection.
