Today in Dubai (UAE), the side event “Unlocking the Potential of Circular Economy and Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) for Heightened Climate Ambition in Central Asia” discussed topical issues of green economy as a tool to combat climate change.
The side event was organized in the Central Asia Pavilion COP-28 of the UNFCCC within the framework of the EU SWITCH Asia program with the participation of the International Center for Green Technologies and Investment Projects (IGTIP) and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).
Climate Change Policy Expert Ranga Pallawala noted that from one side, the countries of Central Asia are very vulnerable to climate change. However, it is a region that has chosen leadership in the transition to a green economy and demonstrates a commitment to a low-carbon economy.
CAREC Executive Director Zafar Makhmudov said that the countries of Central Asia need to solve the problems of climate change, especially the problem of the scarcity of natural resources.
“We see the circular economy, sustainable production and consumption as promising solutions to the climate change challenges. Currently, CAREC is implementing a resource efficiency project in two countries of the region, which is supported by the SWITCH Asia program,” Zafar Makhmudov said.
During the side event, the participants discussed the opportunities to integrate sustainable production and consumption in climate actions in Central Asia based on regional and global experiences, considering the integration of SCP aspects within the NDCs.
