In Kazakhstan, on the World Wetlands Day (WBU), the partners of the “Ramsar Regional Initiative of Central Asia” (RRI-CA) project of the Regional Environmental Center of Central Asia (CAREC) held a number of environmental events.
The social and environmental organization “Naurzum” (NGO “Naurzum”) organized an intellectual quiz for pupils of the Children's Creativity House of the Karamendy village, Naurzum district, Kostanay region, and at the lecture told about the important role of wetlands, the need for their protection and the significance of the Ramsar Convention. The most active participants of the quiz received memorable gifts.
The event was held jointly with the Naurzum State Nature Reserve with the support of the Scientific Research Center for Ecology and Biology of A. Baitursynov Kostanay Regional University.
The organizers of the event also told about the lakes of the Naurzum Reserve, which were included in the Ramsar list on July 12, 2009.
In Aktau, the club “Ecolider” of the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Chemical and Biological Direction (NIS CBD) timed the next program to the World Wetlands Day. It was attended by the RRI-CA Public Relations Representative from Kazakhstan, member of the Regional Environmental Council of the EcoJer Association Adilbek Kozybakov, head of the department of the Ustyurt State Nature Reserve Zhalgas Ustadov, as well as the leaders of the volunteer club “Guardians of Lake Karakol” - eco-coordinator of the NIS CBD Aktau, member of the regional ecological council “EcoJer” Bakytgul Omirkhankyzy and 9th grade student Amina Taizhanova. The participants of the program spoke about the importance of wetlands and the Ramsar Convention, the state and problems of Lake Karakol, as well as their solution.
World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2. It marks the day when the "Convention on Wetlands" was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar back in 1971. The Convention was signed in order to protect wetlands of national and global importance that are in urge of degradation.
