How Kyrgyzstan celebrated World Wetlands Day

Central Asian countries – members of the Ramsar Convention – have widely celebrated World Wetlands Day, and Kyrgyzstan is no exception.

The partners of the project of the Regional Environmental Center of Central Asia (CAREC) “Ramsar Regional Initiative of Central Asia” (RRI-CA) in Kyrgyzstan marked the World Wetlands Day.

Employees of the The State Nature Reserve (SNR) “Karatal-Zhapyryk” organized a number of events. They conducted a demonstration lesson and a quiz game for students of secondary schools in Naryn city and At-Bashy, Kochkor and Naryn districts. The students actively participated in discussions, got acquainted with information about wetlands and the Ramsar Convention, watched videos about environmental protection. The winners of the quiz game received incentive prizes.

In addition, the employees of the “Karatal-Zhapyryk” SNR held a round table dedicated to the World Wetlands Day. It was attended by representatives of the “Salkyn-Tor” State Natural Park, Naryn SNR, Naryn State University named after S. Naamatov and the Naryn regional newspaper  “Tenir-Too”.

The Directorate of the Issyk-Kel Biosphere Territory, together with the Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, held an environmental education event among students of the K.Zhakypov school No. 8 in Balykchy. A field expedition was conducted for the students on the shore of Lake Issyk-Kul.

Environmental actions were also held in the districts of Issyk-Kul region: in the S. Tugobai High School, Ken-Suu village, Issyk-Kul district, the D. Imanov and Chon-Zhargylcha High Schools in Jety-Oguz district and the U. Kaliyev High School in Ak-Suu District.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually on February 2. It marks the day when the “Convention on Wetlands” was adopted in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The purpose of the Convention is to protect wetlands of national and global importance that are in urge of degradation.
