A jury meeting on the Central Asian Local Adaptation Technologies and Practices contest was held on 30 June 2020.
This contest was organized by the Central Asian Climate Network of NGOs within the support of Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) as a part of the World Bank's project "Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin" (CAMP4ASB).
The competition's idea was to facilitate the exchange of knowledge in sustainable nature management under climate change and the use of adaptation methods among the public and farmers. Its main goal was to identify the experience of implementing adaptation measures to help rural communities and farmers overcome difficulties and lack of information on their way to complete sustainability transition.
Applications for the competition were being accepted from 15 September 2019 to 1 May 2020. In total, 25 applications were received from all the Central Asian countries: 14 applications from Tajikistan, 5 applications from Kyrgyzstan, 4 applications from Uzbekistan, 1 application from Kazakhstan and 1 application from Turkmenistan. The members of the competent, independent jury included experts from each Central Asian country:
Saltanat Zhakenova - Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia, Climate Change Specialist, World Bank project "Climate Adaptation Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin" (CAMP4ASB). Ms. Zhakenova is an expert in environmental management with a focus on Central Asian countries. She has over 15 years of experience in institutional strengthening, stakeholder engagement, project management and capacity building at local, national, and regional levels.
Shukhrat Mukhamedzhanov - regional expert of the competition (The National University of Uzbekistan, department of Geography and Natural Resources), an expert in irrigation, drainage, adaptation to climate change, and water resources protection. Mr. Mukhamedzhanov is a Ph.D. technical scientist, a member of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage, a secretary of the working group on Irrigation and Drainage in States with Transition Economy.
Hukumatsho Sharipov – national expert from Tajikistan, Committee for Environmental Protection under the Republic of Tajikistan. Mr. Sharipov has 18 years of government experience as a chief agronomist, director of a state farm, chairman of the agro-industrial complex and head of the agricultural department of the district committee of the Vanchsky district party.
Lyudmila Petrova - national expert from Kazakhstan (Public Association “Angel”). Master of Ecology Science. She has a degree in chemistry and ecology, as well as jurisprudence. She has experience in coordinating and managing projects in NGOs for over 20 years.
Aitkul Burkhanov - national expert from Kyrgyzstan - "Kyrgyz Association of Forest Users and Land Users" (KAFUL). Chairman of the State Forest Service of the Kyrgyz Republic, honored worker of Nature Protection of the Kyrgyz Republic. The work of Mr. Burkhanov is associated with the development of forestry and the improvement of the environment. He is a supporter of innovation processes and industry reforms.
Anvar Kadyrov - national expert from Uzbekistan. He is the president of the Tashkent city Public Association Ecological Society “Ecological Landscape”. He is a member of the EcoForum Council of NGOs of Uzbekistan, the sector specializing on engaging youth. He is the author of articles and books on ecology and water management.
Yelbars Kepbanov - national expert from Turkmenistan Scientific Information Center of Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (SIC ICSD). Mr. Kepbanov is a Ph.D. legal expert, a specialist in international, constitutional, administrative, environmental law, and the author of more than 120 works in those fields. He specializes in the development of environmental legislation, the sustainable management of natural resources, land, and water.

• based on local experience or traditional knowledge
• innovative
• easy to use
• easy to copy
• considering existing forecasts of climate change
• convenient for use by both men and women.

• The 1st place - Akhmedova Mavlyuda, Dekhkanobad village, Republic of Tajikistan, "Growing Potatoes in Sacks"
The 2nd place - Mamatkulova Mavchuda, Sakhovat village, Republic of Tajikistan, "Greenhouse”
The 3rd place - Bozorova Hafiz, Dekhkanobad village, Republic of Tajikistan, "Combating plant diseases with the help of ash and phytopesticides."
The best practices for sustainable land management (including pasture use and forest management):
- The 1st place - Jamaat "Kelechek-Aktektir," Aktektir village, Kyrgyz Republic, "The development of 16 hectares of rain-fed lands in the Aktektir village."
- The 2nd place - Malokhat Buzurova, Gissar district, Dekhkanobad village, Republic of Tajikistan, "Combating drought in gardens by growing rows of sunflowers and corns."
- The 3rd place - Yusupov Sharof, Kabodiyansky district, Republic of Tajikistan, "Almonds cultivation along with oats.".
The best practices for sustainable water resources use:
- The 1st place - Rashidov N.D., Sultonova M.M., O.O. "Saodat", Khujand, Republic of Tajikistan

The 2nd place - Moldarynov Kamchybek, Naryn, Kyrgyz Republic, "Supply tap water to places with insufficient amount of irrigation water."
- The 3rd place - Marupov Aibekhon Abboshanovich, Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan, "Advanced Water Resources Management".
The winners will be awarded with diplomas and valuable prizes by Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia.
