Publication date: 22 May 2024

The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) will provide technical support to the Central Asian countries in the transition to a low-carbon and resource-efficient economy within the framework of the SWITCH-Asia Policy Support Component program, reported the CAREC Executive Director Zafar Makhmudov at the SwitchAsia event “Towards a Regional Circular Economy for Central Asia” on May 22, 2024, in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

As Zafar Makhmudov noted, sustainable consumption and production (SCP) practices and models can be an effective tool to help the countries of Central Asia transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient and circular economy as one of the ways to overcome the triple planetary crises and fulfil international obligations, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.

The meeting brought together representatives of governments, regional organizations, civil society, educational institutions, EU Delegations, SWITCH-Asia grant projects, and experts.

The meeting was dedicated to exploring policies and practices aimed at fostering green, circular and low-carbon development in Central Asia. The participants emphasized the importance of circularity in key sectors like construction, food and tourism.
