Representatives from the relevant departments of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan participated in a training seminar on integrating climate adaptation into territorial and basin planning in the Chon-Kemin and Chu River basins. The event aimed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in addressing climate change adaptation.
The event was organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) on June 13 in Taraz within the framework of the project “Climate Risk Management in Central Asia”, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ).
The event gathered 20 participants from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan - representatives of water and environmental agencies, hydrometeorological services, local administrations, as well as representatives of the Kazakh National University of Water Resources and Irrigation and the Kazakh Scientific-Research Institute of Water Management (KazSRIWM).
They gained practical skills in incorporating adaptation measures for the Chon-Kemin - Chu River basin into territorial planning, both at the provincial and district levels and in the context of national and basin-wide climate change adaptation plans. Given the transboundary nature of the basin, the possibilities of coordinating efforts and institutional cooperation mechanisms between the countries were also discussed.

"I was interested to learn how our neighbors cope with similar climatic challenges. Hearing real cases, discussing them and sharing experience in developing and implementing adaptation measures - I think this is a very valuable experience," Dina Kamerdin, Chief Specialist of the Water Resources and Nature Management, Environmental Expertise Division of the Department of Natural Resources and Nature Management Regulation of the Zhambyl Oblast Akimat.
