Dear colleagues and friends!

Are you interested in water management in Central Asia? Then, mark every Thursday, this September, in your calendar. We are hugely excited to announce a series of events that will give you access to water management expertise.

For the last near-five years, the USAID funded Smart Waters project, implemented by CAREC, has been working in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to help cross-border communities cooperate with their neighbors while also strengthening the high-level dialogue over shared water resources management.

The USAID-funded Smart Waters project includes a complex and ambitious array of issues that address water sector reforms on local, national, and regional levels. We worked not only with water managers and decision makers, but also with educators, scientists, trainers, young leaders, students and other stakeholders involved in water management in the region.

This is also the first project to include Afghanistan in regional dialogue with its Central Asian neighbors on water resources they all share. We are very proud to be the facilitators of this process.

There are many project achievements that we’d like to share with you. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic we will not be able to do this in-person, as originally planned. Instead, we are thrilled to launch an online celebration of the project’s conclusion and achievements. The Smart Waters Grand Finale Marathon will be a series of online events and publications highlighting the project results.

Events are planned for each Thursday this September, and will include presentations and videos, opportunities to debate pertinent issues, and discuss project results. In the runup to the events, we will also publish a number of reports and information pieces based on project results.

To stay up to date, follow #SmartWatersGrandFinale on the CAREC website, USAID/Central Asia and CAREC Facebook pages, USAID/Central Asia and CAREC Twitter accounts, and CAREC’s LinkedIn page. If you are interested in water management in the culturally rich and diverse Central Asian region, cross-border water management issues, and the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management in the real world, don’t miss our online series. The USAID Smart Waters project has delivered a vast range of insights and lessons learned on these issues. This is your opportunity to hear straight from the experts (technical, nation and local), themselves.

We look forward to seeing you join both the run-up and the exciting Thursdays Marathon right to the finish line this September.

Smart Waters project is implemented by CAREC with the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development USAID during the period 2015-2020. Overall objective of the project is to enhance regional cooperation on shared water resources. Specifically, Smart Waters addresses the knowledge dis-lock in the region in water sector, builds working relations among water managers and specialists, and demonstrates the potential of the basin management approach and cooperation with the academia.
