The Kyrgyz Branch of the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (Kyrgyz Branch of CAREC) presents a short documentary film titled “The National Biosafety Mechanism of the Kyrgyz Republic,” produced as part of the project “Implementation of the National Biosafety Mechanism in the Kyrgyz Republic in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol,” carried out with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The film explores the importance of biosafety for preserving Kyrgyzstan’s unique biodiversity, protecting public health, and ensuring the sustainable development of agriculture. Through interviews with representatives of government agencies, international organizations, the scientific community, and farmers, the film highlights the key principles of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and their practical application.
The film shows how Kyrgyzstan is improving its national biosafety system: developing its regulatory framework, strengthening laboratory capacity, implementing modern risk assessment mechanisms and digital tools for government regulation, and enhancing interagency cooperation.
Particular attention has been paid to the project’s role in developing the National Biosafety Mechanism, strengthening the country’s institutional capacity, and ensuring transparency in decision-making processes related to the handling of living modified organisms.
This documentary aims to raise awareness among experts, government officials, the scientific community, farmers, and the general public about the importance of biosafety as an integral component of the Kyrgyz Republic’s sustainable development.
The project “Implementation of the National Biosafety Mechanism in the Kyrgyz Republic in Accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety” aims to strengthen the national biosafety system, ensure the Kyrgyz Republic’s compliance with its obligations under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, as well as to develop institutional capacity and raise awareness in the field of biosafety.
