14th Central Asian Leadership Programme

This week the selection of participants for the 14th Central Asian Leadership Program (CALP) on Environment for Sustainable Development was completed. This year, 25 young leaders from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will participate in the CALP.

The 14th CALP will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, at the Oi-Qaragai Mountain Resort from September 9-13. The programme is organized in co-operation with the Swiss initiative Blue Peace Central Asia, the OSCE Programme Office in Astana, the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek, the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe, and the German Society for International Co-operation (GIZ).

The participants of the 14th CALP will have a very intense five-day program, which will focus on glacial horizons and climate sensitive mountains disaster risk management, promotion of connectivity of Central Asian youth by providing a neutral regional youth dialogue platform for discussing water cooperation, water diplomacy, gender equality, climate change, energy efficiency, gender, the NEXUS approach and other development issues between representatives of governments, academia, civil society, and other stakeholders.

This year the participants will visit the Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction, the State Institution "Kazselezaschita" of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ayusai Dam, the Kumbel River delta, the Big Almaty Lake, where they will be able to get practical knowledge in the field of disaster risk management.

CALP is the flagship program of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), implemented since 2010 and aimed at increasing the leadership potential of young and middle-level managers of various environmental agencies. CALP is focused on addressing multiple sustainable development challenges in the Central Asian region.
