Publication date: 16 April 2025

As part of EcoForum 2025 in Almaty, Narxoz University hosted a training on interactive simulation of the Nexus approach through the Nexus Game. The training was conducted by representatives of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).

The event gathered 16 students from the educational programs “Ecology” and “Environment and Sustainable Development” on 10 April 2025. The training combined both theoretical and practical sessions, allowing participants to immediately apply their new knowledge in practice.

During the simulation, students took on the roles of ministers and prime ministers of fictional countries, managing water, energy, and food resources under the pressure of climate-related challenges.

The gameplay involved diplomatic negotiations, strategic decision-making, and the search for a balance between the interests of all parties. Through this process, participants gained hands-on understanding of the interconnection between sectors, demonstrating environmental awareness, initiative, and readiness for collaboration.

The training concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between CAREC and Narxoz University. The university will officially integrate the Nexus Game into its educational program as a practical learning tool. Game sets in Russian and Kazakh were handed over to the Director of the School of Humanities, Anel Kulakhmetova, by Ludmila Kiktenko, Program Manager for Environmental Management.

In addition to the training, the CAREC team participated in a roundtable discussion on "Modern Challenges and Prospects for Training Environmental and Sustainable Development Specialists in Higher Education Institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan," which was also held within the framework of the conference.
