Dushanbe, Tajikistan - On December 18, CAREC held a transboundary training on the Amu Darya river basin.
The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) held this training within the framework of the project “Climate-Responsive and Gender-Sensitive Basin Management” (hereafter referred to as the Project). The Project is part of the Regional Program “Climate-Sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia,” implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
The training was attended by specialists of river basin organizations (RBOs) Vakhsh, Kafarnigan, and Panj (Tajikistan), as well as specialists from the Center for Water Sector Reforms of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The main objective of the training was to teach participants the concept of integrated water resources management (IWRM) and tools for improving the efficiency of water use and water allocation in agriculture. The participants got acquainted with modern web-GIS services that allow taking into account climate risks in basin planning, as well as discussed the role of inclusive approach and got acquainted with the gender situation in water management organizations of Central Asia.
In addition to the main training material, the Project Manager and Senior Policy Advisor, National Water Resources Management (NWRM) in Tajikistan - Zurab Jincharadze - provided the participants with an overview of the National Water Resources Management (NWRM) Project, which aims to improve the living standards of the population in rural areas, especially its vulnerable segments, through integrated water resources management (IWRM) in the Tajik part of the Syrdarya River Basin.
The training ended with the awarding of certificates to the participants and an active discussion aimed at exchanging views and strengthening cooperation.
Plans for 2025
Next year, CAREC plans to conduct eight trainings at the national level - two trainings in each of the countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan. Four regional trainings are also planned with participation of representatives of basin organizations, including basin inspectorates of Kazakhstan, chief water administrations of Kyrgyzstan, river basin organizations of Tajikistan, production associations (suvkhodjalykis) of Turkmenistan and basin administrations of irrigation systems of Uzbekistan. Special attention will be paid to the involvement of women specialists, as well as to highlighting key topics such as national water legislation, IWRM, climate risks and basin planning methods.
CAREC will continue to promote the development of regional cooperation in the field of water resources and capacity building of water sector specialists in Central Asia.

The project's goal is to strengthen regional cooperation among countries in the region by providing informational and theoretical support to stakeholders in the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). As part of the project, 24 gender-sensitive trainings will be conducted at national, transboundary, and regional levels.
