Media and Visualization: How to Make Climate Stories Convincing – Fourth Day of CALP

Publication date: 18 September 2025

Almaty, Kazakhstan – The fourth day of the 15th Central Asian Leadership Programme (CALP), held under the auspices of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), was dedicated to modern methods of science communication and the creation of multimedia climate content.

Abzal Bekturgan, multimedia editor at Factcheck.kz, conducted an intensive workshop where participants learned to create compelling visual content using text, images, audio, video, and interactive tools. The training covered both technical skills such as framing, camera settings, editing photos and videos, working with sound, and using filters and typography and creative aspects like storytelling, choosing effective formats for different audiences, and transforming climate research into accessible messages. Through hands-on exercises, participants practiced producing posts, stories, and video clips that make complex topics such as climate change and water scarcity more engaging for the public.

Particular interest was sparked by sessions with Aizada Toma, Mentor and Regional Editor of the Data Communication Fellowship Program at ForSet.ge, who guided participants through the principles of data storytelling. She introduced practical techniques for selecting the right types of charts, crafting strong titles, and turning complex climate statistics into clear, visual narratives. Participants also explored different formats such as infographics, data-driven posts, and interactive tools, learning how to make climate research both accessible and compelling for diverse audiences.

The day demonstrated that mastering visual tools and media is becoming a key skill for young leaders in the region who are striving to advance the climate agenda and achieve tangible change in Central Asia.
