How to Speak and Be Heard: Media Focus of the Second Day of CALP

Publication date: 16 September 2025

Almaty, Kazakhstan – The second day of the 15th Central Asian Leadership Programme (CALP) was dedicated to developing media competencies and practical public speaking skills. The training sessions were conducted by MediaNet experts — Igor Bratcev and Adil Jalilov.

МYoung leaders learned how to communicate complex environmental topics clearly and confidently to diverse audiences, formulate key messages and arguments, and counter disinformation, which is particularly sensitive in the context of climate change and natural resource management.

Participants discussed how to transform research findings into accessible formats for the wider public, strike a balance between scientific accuracy and clarity, and engage with the media to promote the ideas of sustainable development. The practical component included exercises in speech preparation, the development of environmentally relevant messages, and a simulated press conference, where the region’s future leaders were able to apply their new skills in practice.

The intensive work of the second day demonstrated that the ability to speak about environmental issues in a clear and persuasive manner is a vital tool for advancing sustainable initiatives in Central Asia.

The 15th CALP is organized by CAREC with the financial support of the OSCE Programme Office in Astana, the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek, the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe, the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) within the framework of the Blue Peace project, as well as in partnership with the Kazakh-German University (DKU).
