Valuation of Ecosystem Services for Improving Agricultural Water Management in Kazakhstan
Project period: 1st May 2016 - 31st December 2016
Donor: ICARDA (The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas)
About the project:
Over the last two years, The Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC, www.carececo.org ) has been implementing in Turkestan area a project aiming at creating cooperation mechanisms between local stakeholders in order to enhance ecosystem services provision. Specifically, CAREC worked on creating a formal relationship between the Karatau nature reserve, farmers, herders, schools from Khantagi and Ikansuu villages, and a local NGO.
After a rapid assessment, water related ecosystem services were identified as very important to support irrigated agriculture and biodiversity Building on this existing experience, the present project focuses on water resources. After completing an agricultural water resources analysis with the use of a SWAT model and an analysis of the links between water resources availability and economic impacts on water users, it is proposed to develop specific activities and mechanisms aimed at empowering women groups and promote more rational water uses. Project results are expected to be linked with other CAREC projects and efficiently up-scaled to the policy-making level through a regular dialogue between the project team and policy makers during the course of the project. Project has been implemented by ICARDA (The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas). Partners of the project are South Kazakhstan Hydrological and Amelioration Expedition and NGO “Biogen”
Activities of the project:
a. Identify key drivers for water use and water-use change in the low Syr Darya River Basin and their economic impact on water users;
b. Develop a set of mechanisms, including incentive-based ones, to promote improved water uses, with a focus on women-led, agriculture-based, income-generating activities;
c. Mainstream project results into development planning and policy making of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
