ICWC Meeting: Seeking Joint Solutions for Sustainable Water Resources Management in Central Asia

At its 90th anniversary meeting, the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination of Central Asia (ICWC) discussed regional cooperation in the face of climate challenges and water scarcity in Central Asia.

The event took place on August 14, 2025, in Burabay, Republic of Kazakhstan. It brought together representatives of sectoral and foreign affairs agencies of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as international financial institutions and development organizations, including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, GIZ, and others.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kanat Bozumbayev, who also held bilateral meetings with the heads of water management agencies of several Central Asian countries. The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) was represented online by its Executive Director, Batyr Mamedov.

Participants exchanged experience, discussed practical tools, possible new forms of cooperation, and joint projects, and reviewed the current situation in the region’s water sector, as well as the plans, priorities, and approaches of donors and partners. This contributed to strengthening mutual understanding and finding coordinated solutions for sustainable water resources management in Central Asia.
